The watch to which this piece pays homage is the legendary Rolex 5517 . Well to me and I am sure many others, this homage watch actually made me . The watch to which this piece pays homage is the legendary Rolex 5517 Submariner. It was a design released in the 1970's for the Royal Navy. Only about 1200 were ever made, and perhaps a few hundred still exist. It was housed in a smaller 39mm case. Well to me and I am sure many others, this homage watch actually made me aware of the beautiful Rolex 5517 that it is inspired from. The Rolex 5517 (also known as the mil-sub) was a very limited military issue of around 1200 pieces for the Royal Navy in the 1970s.
The 5517 is one of the priciest vintage Rolex watches, of the 1200 watches that were produced for the British special forces, it is estimated that only 180 still exist. In good condition, these watches fetch upward of over 0,000 at auction, a staggering sum for the casual enthusiast.

Of the plethora of models Steinhart makes, the Ocean Vintage Military really stands out as a unique offering. This is because the OVM refers to a very specific, rare and interesting model of the Rolex Submariner, the ref. 5517 Mil-Sub. The 5517 was a military issue Submariner for the British Royal Navy in the early 70’s. Stay tuned for the full review, where I’ll get deeper into the details of the watch, the Rolex 5517 it is based on, and how this beauty looks paired with some choice NATO straps. by Zach Weiss

The Steinhart Ocean Vintage Military, owes homage to the rare and rather desirable 5517 Mil-Sub (military submariner), which was a limited run of watches made specially for the Royal Britsh Navy in the early 70’s.Steinhart 103-0658 OVM Ocean Vintage Military 42mm reviewrolex 5517 5513historymilsubmilitary submarinerunboxingspecifications
Yep, it’s the Steinhart Ocean Vintage Military, their pitch perfect homage to the Rolex 5517 Mil-Sub. Rather than espouse more accolades for this watch, I’ll direct you to the lengthy original review , which should address everything you need to know about it. I’ve owned several Steinharts, but this is my favorite. It was quite controversial with its Rolex 5517 looks. But it’s no rip off. It’s got its own character & it’s a future investment in my opinion. But if you can afford a Rolex, you don’t need a Steinhart Ocean Vintage Military like mine! After some research, I came across Steinhart, and although their Ocean One series is an homage to the classic Sub, this OVM model referenced the Rolex 5517 Mil-Sub. Given the history, rarity, and ridiculously high price tag of the original, I was very happy to go for this homage by Steinhart.
